Federal judge blocks key parts of Arizona immigration law

Today

A Federal Judge in Arizona issued a temporary injunction on Wednesday against four provisions of Arizona's new immigration law. The law still takes effect today but without some controversial sections -- including the portion that requires an officer to determine the immigration status of the person stopped, and detain if there is suspicion they're in the country illegally. In a statement, Governor Jan Brewer (R) said that she was disappointed with the judge’s ruling and “will take a close look at every single element Judge Bolton removed from the law.” The law, S.B. 1070, passed the state legislature in April.

Frmr. Cemetery officials testify on grave site management

Today

The U.S. Army Inspector General’s office released a report last month on management problems at Arlington National Cemetery. The report showed a cemetery that operated under poor management with mishandled grave sites and poor record keeping. Today, the Subcommittee on Contracting Oversight will hold a hearing to examine the report and investigate what the Committee calls a “pervasive mismanagement and potential waste, fraud, and abuse in contracts at the Cemetery.”

In particular, the hearing will review findings that include more than 200 errors in Arlington's recordkeeping and 12 graves that were either found empty or misidentified. Subcommittee Chairwoman Senator Claire McCaskill (D-MO) believes there could be thousands more affected graves, because the military report only focused on one part of Arlington.

Arlington National Cemetery’s former superintendent John Metzler and his deputy Thurman Higginbotham have been subpoenaed to testify. This will mark their first public appearance since the Army released its report.

Duncan gave the news in a speech on education at the National Press Club.
